700 tons of ammonium nitrate have been found in a port in southern India and have been stored for 5 years

The Indian government said on August 8 that 700 tons of ammonium nitrate were also found in the port of Chennai in southern India after the explosion at Beirut port triggered by ammonium nitrate. They were imported from South Korea in 2015 and have been stored in the port for five years. According to Agence France Presse on August 8, India also investigated the dangerous substances stored in Chinese ports after a large-scale explosion in Beirut port area of Lebanon on August 4. It was found that nearly 700 tons of ammonium nitrate were also stored in the port of Chennai in southern India. It is said that this batch of ammonium nitrate was imported from South Korea in 2015. According to the Indian government, in 2015, an Indian company imported ammonium nitrate in 37 containers from South Korea as an agricultural fertilizer. However, the customs authorities found that this batch of ammonium nitrate was actually used for the manufacture of explosives and was immediately seized. A local customs official in Chennai tried to allay concerns by explaining that the chemical was harmless and the auction process was in progress, AFP reported. The official stressed that the seized materials had been safely kept and would not pose a threat to the safety of the public. Up to now, 154 people have been killed and more than 5000 people have been injured in the explosion accident in Beirut port area of Lebanon. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored for six years. Ammonium nitrate is often used in chemical fertilizer and chemical raw materials, while ammonium nitrate with high nitrogen content can be used in the production of civil explosives. In the past few decades, there are not a few explosion accidents caused by ammonium nitrate. When ammonium nitrate is mixed with fuel oil, it is a powerful explosive. In 1995, the federal building in Oklahoma was attacked by an ammonium nitrate car bomb, killing 168 people and injuring 680 people. In 2011, seven people were killed and 15 injured in an ammonium nitrate bomb attack on a government office building and a newspaper office in Oslo, Norway.
